Refurbishment and extension of the community center

2023, Sonnalde 21, Appenzell

Ruprecht Architekten, project competition in selective procedure

This new community home forms a harmonious duo with the existing building in the landscape, highlighting the interplay between individuality and community.

The existing building remains central, while the new structure blends gently with the topography, respecting the prominence of the original. Both buildings stand independently, connected by a subtle structure that ensures barrier-free access.

Old and new follow similar typologies: the existing building arranges rooms around a central communal space, while the new building offers decentralized community areas of varying sizes. The layouts balance privacy and openness, with a courtyard providing visual connection. A sculptural roof anchors the new building in the landscape, reinforcing the ensemble’s identity.

Modern paired windows reinterpret regional building traditions. Communal spaces soften the institutional feel and open towards the surroundings. Balconies and loggias frame views, while the sculptural wooden facade blends tradition with contemporary design.
